What is a T1 document?

When it comes to exporting goods from the UK to the EU, a T1 transit document may be required. But what is a T1 document, and when do you need one?

If you’re unsure whether a T1 applies to your shipment, or how to go about arranging one, don’t worry. This guide covers everything you need to know, including what a T1 document is, how to obtain one, and how using a trusted freight forwarder can simplify the process.

What is a T1 document?

A T1 document is used to facilitate goods movement from one customs territory to another (normally from outside the EU towards a destination within or outside the EU), delaying a payment of duty and VAT at each country border it crosses. In essence, a T1 acts as a financial guarantee and places goods under customs control while in transit, so that any applicable customs duties and VAT are paid at destination, rather than the
first port of entry in EU.

When do I need a T1 document?

You will generally need a T1 document if the goods are being exported from UK to a country further inland than the first sea border in the EU, especially since UK is no longer a part of the European Union. If your goods are moving from the UK through EU to another non-EU country, you always need a T1 form.

How does the T1 transit process work?

The transit process begins with a request for a T1 document from your Customs Clearance partner. Once all necessary documents for creating the T1 and export paperwork are received, the T1 is lodged and authorised by UK Border Force.

The Transit Accompanying Document (TAD) is then issued to the driver prior to departure from the UK. After crossing the UK-EU border, the goods are presented at the Customs Office of Transit. EU Customs supervise the movement of the goods until they arrive at their final destination, where the Transit procedure is formally closed.

How do I obtain a T1 document?

To obtain a T1 document, you will need to supply many of the same documents that are required for an export customs clearance:

  • Commercial Invoice
  • Packing List
  • Transport Documentation
  • Any other supporting documentation
  • Customs Guarantee – normally this is held by the customs broker completing the T1 and export documentation
  • Office of departure from UK, office of transit (first port of entry in EU) and office of destination (where T1 will be discharged)

How long does it take to issue a T1?

At Burhill Logistics, we pride ourselves on our operational efficiency. We commit to issuing a T1 within 1-2 hours if all documents are in order.

What do I need to do once a T1 has been issued?

Once we have issued your T1 document, we will always provide full instructions on how to activate the procedure, so that the goods can start their movement. The procedure can vary from port to port. It is important to follow the instructions we provide to avoid any issues at the first border in EU.
